You can not switch your Minions in battle. You battle with a team of up to 5 Minions at a time. The random battle in the grass or sea or underwater and many trainers to battle. You can let your Pokémon hold one item, whether consumable or not. (I’m not quite sure about this now, the last Pokémon version I played was Ruby)
